Default Buttons for Joy-Con and Pro Controller

Get your buttons straight before the party starts: Hello Kitty Party Land controls change with the activity and controller layout. Knowing the basic shortcuts helps you check items, take photos, and keep a board game moving. These default layouts apply to the Nintendo Switch version.

On a horizontal Joy-Con, follow the button’s position while holding the controller sideways. “Right Button” means the face button on the right in that orientation.

Controller mappings can be configured in the console’s System Settings. If you have changed them, account for those changes when following the default inputs here.

The instructions below use the two-Joy-Con and Pro Controller layout. Use the matching position in the table when playing with a horizontal Joy-Con.

Board Game and Minigame Inputs

Start a board game by talking to the receptionist at the center of the Game Park. Once your turn begins, the main inputs are:

  • A: Stop the roulette.
  • Left Stick, then A: Choose a direction at a branching path and confirm it.
  • Y: Open the board map during your turn.
  • Left Stick while viewing the map: Move around the map.
  • X: Open the Game Pad to inspect your items.
  • A with an item selected: Use that item.

Some items can be used during another player’s turn. Check your inventory between turns so you can help someone before their opportunity passes.

Pausing the Board Game

The host opens the Pause Menu by holding + or −. From there, you can review the controls and rules or end the game.

Hold the button when you need the menu; a quick tap is not the listed pause input.

Minigames and Petit Games

Read each minigame’s rules before starting. The basic movement and menu layout does not replace the instructions for an individual activity.

Petit Games are solo activities shown on the Game Pad at the top of the screen. Other players continue taking their turns while one is active. Finish before your next turn arrives: if you are still playing the Petit Game, that turn gets skipped.

Game Pad, Outfits, and Sticker Book Shortcuts

In Hometown, press X to open the Game Pad. Its menus let you inspect tools, view partners, and change clothing.

The inventory includes the Watering Can, Shovel, Fishing Rod, Fruit Basket, and Bug Net. A gauge shows each tool’s current ability level.

For outfit changes:

  • Open the Clothing Menu to choose clothing, then select its color.
  • Open Favorites to register your current outfit or equip a saved set.
  • Use the Partner Menu to access special clothing received through friendship.

You can save up to eight outfit sets. Register combinations you want to reuse so you can switch without selecting every piece again.

Browsing and Applying Stickers

Press Y to open the Sticker Book, then move the cursor over a sticker to see its name.

To turn pages, press L or R. You can also press A while pointing at an empty space.

If you own the Character T-Shirt, highlight a sticker and press Y to apply it. That shirt is an early purchase bonus redeemed through a Nintendo eShop download code.

When shopping, stand in front of a shelf and press A to inspect the merchandise on the Game Pad. Selecting clothing lets you try it on before buying.

Camera Controls and Photo Countdown Actions

From normal play, press L to change cameras and R to use the camera. Once you are operating a camera, the shoulder buttons handle zoom instead.

There are three camera types:

CameraPosition or angle controlZoomStart countdown
Tripod CameraFront-facing viewL / RA
Selfie StickLeft Stick adjusts the angleL / RA
Drone CameraLeft Stick adjusts the positionL / RA

Press Y in the camera controls to choose a focus target.

With the Drone Camera, press X to switch movement modes. One mode moves the camera around its focus; the other lets you move it freely with the stick. Use the drone when helping characters with hide-and-seek requests.

Moving During the Countdown

Starting the timer does not lock everyone in place. During the countdown, you can:

  • Move with the Left Stick.
  • Look toward the camera with X.
  • Jump with B.
  • Emote with Y.

Set the framing before starting the countdown, then use those inputs to position your character for the shot. Photos are saved to the system’s storage.

Multiplayer: Which Controls Belong to the Host?

If a menu or camera action is not available to you, check who is hosting. Several shared actions belong to the host.

In local play, controller 1 is the host. Online, the player who creates the room becomes the host.

The host handles:

  • Menu selections and camera use.
  • Opening the Sticker Book.
  • Entering and leaving buildings.
  • Starting board games, minigames, Melody Cake, and Poster Studio.
  • Pausing the game.
  • Adding other players.

For local play, use the main controller to choose the player count. Up to four players can play on one console, and additional players can select a user profile or join as guests.

Online games support two to four players and work with registered Friends. The host selects Create Room; everyone else selects Search for Room. If the room uses a password, enter the host’s four-digit number. Online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Melody Cake Controls

Melody Cake is at the left end of the Creative Labo. Decorations on the cake’s top control percussion, while decorations around its sides control the melody.

While editing:

  • B: Switch between the cake’s top and sides.
  • A: Place a decoration at the cursor, or remove a decoration already there.
  • L / R: Switch between the Tool Menu and Instrument Menu.
  • B from a menu: Return the cursor to the cake.
  • Y: Loop playback while you continue decorating.

Use L to access the Tools/Tempo Menu. In the tempo menu, the up and down buttons change the speed; larger values play faster.

You can place up to four decorations on the top and four on the side of each piece, without duplicating decorations. To join matching melodies placed side by side, press X on the melody to the right.

Catalog Shortcuts

There are four Cake Catalogs, each holding up to 16 cakes.

On the catalog selection screen, press X to copy a catalog, then choose another and press A to paste over it. Press Y to play a catalog’s cakes in sequence.

Check the destination before pasting: copying a catalog replaces that destination’s contents.

Poster Studio Controls

Poster Studio is at the right end of the Creative Labo. Each stamp becomes a layer, allowing you to build pictures with overlapping shapes.

On the creation screen, use L and R to navigate menus and B to return to the canvas.

The canvas has separate modes for positioning and transforming stamps:

  • Move: Press B, then move the cursor with the Left Stick.
  • Scale: Press X, then adjust the stamp’s size with the Left Stick.
  • Free Scale: Press X again from scale mode. Move the stick horizontally for width or vertically for height.
  • Rotate: Press Y, then rotate with the Left Stick.
  • Coarse Rotation: From rotate mode, press X to rotate in 15-degree increments.
  • Place a stamp: Press A in any canvas mode.

Layers and Full-Screen View

Press L to access the Edit menu, where you can insert, copy, reorder, or delete layers. The Layer Menu also includes an option to restore the last deleted layer.

Click the stick while the cursor is on the canvas to enter full-screen view. In that view, L and R switch between layers. Click the stick again to leave full screen.

Your pictures fit into four Sketchbooks, each with 16 pages. Select a Sketchbook and press Y to play its pages as an animation. On the page list, Y instead displays the selected page’s layer overlap, helping you inspect how the image is assembled.
